Painting

For large areas paint is usually sprayed onto surfaces as a fine mist, but for (smaller areas) it can be applied by hand using a brush or a roller. The types of paints and other chemicals used will vary depending on the job. Environmental impacts will vary depending on the type of paint used. Avoid spillages, and when they occur use appropriate spillage cleanup and appropriate disposal to manage the spill.

Key environmental issues include:

• appropriate storage and handling to reduce risk of pollution (paints and cleaning materials)
• avoid pollution risks from spillages or disposal (carried out in accordance with regulations
• disposal of used tins (paints will be classified as hazardous waste)
• information on COSHH worksheets are followed (refer to Health & Safety Executive - COSHH)
• use of low odour and low VOC paints.
