Roofing

There is a wide variety of roofing materials from which to select a roof finish. Whilst the selection of a roofing material will usually be for aesthetic, cost and planning reasons, it is worth considering alternatives and the environmental impacts of their use. Roofing materials are particularly amenable to reuse. Reuse of any of the durable materials below, from a local demolition site further reduces environmental impact. The types of roofing materials available include; natural slate or stone, artificial slate, clay tiles and accessories, concrete tiles and accessories, metal, roofing membranes, and naturally-occurring compounds (e.g. asphalt).

Key environmental issues include:

• handling and storage of materials to minimise damage
• noise and dust created during removal of old material and application of new.
• reuse and recycling of materials on site (e.g. of offcuts or previously removed materials)
• waste minimisation (e.g. reduction of offcuts and damaged materials).
