With the vast quantities of geotechnical data generated by transportation schemes and the ever increasing software applications the seemingly limitless potential for data usage is surprisingly inhibited. Why is this? Simply, without compatible data file formats and data transfer formats information cannot be electronically exchanged.
In the construction industry the transportation sector is addressing some really hard issues on the broad subject of effective data management. Gone are the days of voluminous reports, manual translation and transfer of data from one application to another, bulk storage of paper in archives, and the cumbersome retrieval of information.
CIRIA has been commissioned by the Highways Agency to lead a study to review existing electronic geotechnical data transfer formats used throughout the lifecycle of infrastructure projects. This study encompasses not just the transfer formats but the data and data management needs of users, the current software and its compatibility, any statutory requirements and the associated training needs.
Although initially meeting specific market sector needs the example set by this project could have wide construction market appeal as it embraces the whole subject of effective data management.
