‘Zero Defects’ is perhaps the holy grail of the Latham/Egan agenda – often reported but rarely sighted. Are defects a fact of life? Are we in the UK worse than other countries? Are some jobs worse than others? – and if so, what are the identifiers of success? What can we do about defects? All these questions have been there for the answering but to date (as far as we know) to little avail. This project aims to explore this subject and in particular draw conclusions about how all players in the construction process can contribute to an improvement in outcomes.
CIRIA has set up a Collaborative Project in which the subject is examined through a series of tutored workshops at which the participants work together as a team. There are presentations on particular topics and the findings are being recorded and sorted by CIRIA, leading to the preparation of a Defects Toolkit, which will be launched in 2008.
