Optimising materials

The table below represents the possibilities for improvement of waste materials for use in higher value applications and provides an indication of the grade of application, high grade indicating the best possible use. It is intended to provoke thought on what can be done with waste materials but also to provide information on which secondary materials can be used in place of required primary materials. Where indicated, select the box for further information on the required process or process options.

The information contained herein is not exhaustive and therefore not all process options have been detailed.

Best application will depend upon grading of arisings.

In the case of producing aggregates from inert waste, users may wish to refer to The Quality Protocol, published by Wrap, the purpose of which is " …to provide a uniform control process for producers from which they can reasonably state and demonstrate that their product has been fully recovered and is no longer a waste."

Users may also find it useful to refer to the Site Waste Management Plan recently published by Construction Excellence, which “…sets out the basic structure of SWMPs and how companies can best use them to improve and manage their operations at all stages of site activity."
