With a view to give access to exclusive rights of exploration and extraction of raw materials in geographically defined maritime regions, the Danish Agency for Spatial and Environmental Planning will carry out auctions as described in Danish Executive Order No. 1451 of 15 December 2009.
For the purpose of holding an auction 10 November 2010 the Danish Agency for Spatial and Environmental Planning hereby invites interested parties to select the maritime regions for which they request an auction. The parties are expected to base the selection of maritime areas on future requirements of raw materials.
Expressions of interest must reach the Agency for Spatial and Environmental Planning by 10 September 2010 at the latest.
Additional information about the auction and the expression of interest, incl. a form to be used when submitting the expression of interest can be found on the agency website, please click here
The 25 EMSAGG members meeting was held at FPS Economy, SMEs, Self-employed and Energy in Brussels, Belgium on 07 May 2010. The day included three presentations focussing on the exploration of the Hinderbank area, Belgian Sector, offered by:
Koen Degrendele’s presentation offered an overview of the The Hinderbanken Project. The presentation outlined the background to the project, the exploration area, including the size of the area, the location, depth and also how the extraction area contains several sandbanks from the Hinderbanken group. Koen Degrendele explained the project set-up – that is an informal Public Private Partnership, consisting of a group of projects; all individually management financed, yet with common goals.
Elias Van Quickelborne’s offered a presentation titled Flanders: Quest for Sand. The paper covered the coastal division associated with the Hinderbanken Project, including the role of marinas and fishing ports, hydrography and marine meteorology and also coastal protection. The presentation listed the current situation in terms of extraction volumes, the uses of extracted material and also projects which will start in the near future; such as the Zwin and Ostend projects and the integrated master-plan covering the rest of the Flemish Coast. The presentation concluded by explaining the ‘Quest for Sand’, the seismic surveys undertaken, vibrocores, the integration / interpretation of data, how extraction areas were defined, environmental impact assessments undertaken and also the extraction license granted.
The final paper was given by Marc Roche, FPS Economy, SMEs, Self-employed & Energy. Marc Roche’s paper focused on the seabed cartography of exploration zone 4 on the Belgian Continental Shelf. The presentation explained the context of the Hinderbanken Project, including an overview of the Belgian Continental Shelf. It offered detailed information on the surveys undertaken using the EM1002 & EM3002D sonars on board the (research vessel) Belgica and the results of these surveys including Bathymetry and derived products. The paper also outlined new extraction zones and their volumetric potential.

CIRIA's coastal and marine group is currently working on the following proposals and projects:
New CIRIA Guidance - The use of concrete in maritime engineering – a good practice guide (C674) |
Concrete is a highly versatile, cost-effective construction material, offering not only strength and durability, but also a wide range of opportunities in terms of structural type and form, construction techniques and surface aesthetics. It has been, and will continue to be used extensively in the marine environment. Despite the recognised need for increasing levels of capital expenditure on concrete maritime structures, few technical guides on the design and maintenance of such structures exist. A need for consolidated guidance was identified by the UK and France, and joint action proposed to address industry requirements. Visit CIRIA's publication page for further information or to purchase the book. |
New CIRIA Guidance - Cost standards for dredging equipment 2009 (C684) |
C684 - Cost standards for dredging equipment 2009 is now available. This publication is intended for use by all stakeholders in dredging projects which include consultants, existing and potential clients, project financiers, insurers and dredging contractors. The publication offers a standard method to establish the capital and related costs of various types of dredging plant and equipment commonly in use. |
RP927 International Levee Handbook |
CIRIA is involved with an international collaborative research project developing a single, comprehensive levee handbook collating international practices and knowledge will make dissemination and wider uptake of consistent standards and approaches more effective, proving greater value for money with countries applying best practice suitable to their local conditions. The use of levees (also known as flood defence embankments) remains an important physical means of flood risk management. In the future, major programmes of work will be required to assess and improve the protection provided by levees, addressing the challenges of poor quality design and construction as well as the deteriorating condition of levees and the implementation of adaptation measures to respond to climate change and population growth. Thus far, good practice on levees has not been widely shared between international and national organisations, and consequently benefits of improving the effectiveness of assessment, design, construction and management of levees has not been realised. |
CON 177 Geo-Seas |
The overall objective of the Geo-Seas project is to build and deploy a unified marine geo-scientific data infrastructure within Europe that will affect a data grid. This will result in a major and significant improvement in locating, accessing and delivering federated marine geological and geophysical data and data-products from national geological surveys and research institutes in Europe to research communities. |
RP787 - CIRIA Beach management manual |
CIRIA is in the process of updating another well respected publication, the 1996 CIRIA Beach management manual. An Environment Agency scoping study was completed in 2007 identifying a number of changes and additions to be made to the existing manual to increase the uptake and use of the manual. These changes included targeting beach managers who are increasingly non-engineers, and more involved with the amenity aspects of beach rather than coastal defence. If you would like to know more about the project please contact Kristina Gamst. Email: kristina.gamst@ciria.org |
