FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
In 2001, English Partnerships, Northampton Borough Council (NBC) and the Princes Foundation started a project in Upton, Northampton to create an urban extension that would promote best practice in sustainable urban growth.
The proposal included plans for a sustainable drainage scheme - developed in accordance with government guidelines and approved by the Environment Agency - that would incorporate permeable paving and swales to improve water quality and amenity before surface water discharges to the River Nene. It also proactively manages flow routes and has been designed for exceedance.
Seven years on and with the SUDS scheme now well established, CIRIA (with sponsorship from English Partnerships) has organised a workshop to highlight the benefits yielded from taking a strategic view to reducing flood risk by adopting a sustainable approach to surface water management and by securing effective stakeholder engagement.
A morning seminar will present the concepts, strategic approach, design, techniques, delivery and maintenance of this project, followed by an afternoon guided tour of the site which will allow participants to witness the scheme in action.
This event will be of interest to anyone wishing to gain an insight into the process of consultation and links between key stakeholders; learn about the strategic approach to the management of surface water and find out more about the types of sustainable drainage techniques incorporated into this project.
