Awareness of Sustainable drainage systems (SUDS) by practitioners and their implementation in developments continues to increase steadily. Practical experience has led to a re-definition of best practice and a greater understanding of basic principles. It is important that practitioners not only have access to the best possible information, but also have the confidence to implement guidance and use SUDS within developments.
Recent consultation exercises have identified a need for further training and expertise for decision makers and practitioners. In response to this CIRIA, in partnership with Sustainable Drainage Associates, has developed a training programme for 2007 to build on current SUDS guidance and assist with the dissemination and implementation of good practice.
SUDS training modules will take place in London on the following dates:
• Introduction to SUDS, 16 January 2007
• Designing for SUDS, 20-21 February 2007
• Planning and evaluating SUDS, 20 March 2007
• Maintenance and adoption of SUDS, 21 March 2007
The training modules are designed for all levels of knowledge from professionals new to SUDS to professionals who have extensive knowledge and experience of sustainable drainage concepts. The training programme will enable practitioners to efficiently plan, design, construct and manage SUDS schemes within the relevant legal and regulatory framework. The events will be lead by nationally recognised practitioners that have experience of implementing SUDS in a range of developments. Interactive course guidance will use a variety of learning styles to engage and inspire delegates and the modules will include a number of demonstrative group exercises and case studies.
Delegates may attend individual modules or a combination. Each is fully accredited for CIWEM and construction CPD schemes.

Programme delivery
Both CIRIA and Sustainable Drainage Associates have a credible reputation
for delivery of SUDS related training and projects, including the design of
SUDS schemes and the production and dissemination of SUDS guidance.
Course tutors
Steve Wilson, Sustainable Drainage Associates – Steve has over 20 years practical experience of geotechnical and environmental design for civil engineering and building structures including drainage design and redevelopment of contaminated land. He is co-author of CIRIA publication C582 Source control using constructed pervious surfaces and is lead author for CIRIA publication C609 SUDS hydraulic, structural and water quality advice relating to SUDS techniques.
Bob Bray, Sustainable Drainage Associates – Bob is a landscape architect, who has been prominent in the design, management and promotion of sustainable drainage since 1996, and developed an environmental approach to managing rainfall. He was responsible for the inception of SUDS guidance at South Gloucestershire Council and the design of two early SUDS ‘demonstration sites’ at Oxford and Hopwood motorway service areas. Bob has also designed SUDS for housing, schools, wildlife sites, commercial development and public parks.
He is co-author of SUDS hydraulic, structural and water quality advice and has contributed to The operation and maintenance of sustainable drainage systems (and associated costs) based on experiences gained from the two MSA’s
Guest tutors
Jon Reed, Atkins – Jon is a chartered civil and environmental engineer with experience in sustainable water management. He is responsible for feasibility and design work for SUDS solutions for both new-build and retrofit situations. He has also represented developers and local authorities with respect to the implementation of SUDS through the planning process.
John Holmes, Solicitor – John is a planning and environmental law partner and is an acknowledged specialist in his field. John has many years’ experience of the public sector and advises on all aspects of planning and environmental law. He currently acts for a number of public sector and major development clients.
David De Rosa, Clear Environmental Consultants – David
is a chartered engineer with extensive experience in the detailed design of
urban drainage systems as well as SUDS and has used a variety of modelling
software. He is a recognised specialist in the area and has worked with a
number of organisations, including sewerage undertakers, contractors and consulting
engineers and has delivered training for drainage engineers.
CIRIA is a member-owned organisation that works with the construction industry, government and academia to provide performance improvement products and services in the construction and related industries.
It was founded in 1960 and currently engages with around 700 subscribing organisations. Activities include collaborative projects, networking, publishing, workshops, seminars and conferences. About 40 projects are run at any one time, about 100 events are staged every year, and 25 books published per annum.
