FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Sustainable drainage systems (SUDS) are drainage systems designed to contribute to the achievement of sustainable development. Rather than traditional pipe and sewer arrangements, the philosophy of SUDS is to replicate as closely as possible the natural drainage from a site, before development, manage the risks of flooding and pollution and contribute to local amenity.
The SUDS Manual (C697), CIRIA’s comprehensive new guidance for the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of SUDS aims to assist with the effective implementation of SUDS within existing and new developments. The guidance addresses landscaping, biodiversity issues, public perception and community involvement as well as water quality treatment and flood risk management. With over 600 pages separated into 25 detailed chapters, it should provide confidence in the design and construction of SUDS for all engineers, whatever their level of experience in delivering SUDS.
A smaller companion guide, Site handbook for the construction of SUDS (C698) has been published as a readily accessible guidance for easy reference and use on site.
A downloadable version of these guidance documents is available from www.ciria.org/downloads.htm. For further information and to order a printed copy of either publication visit www.ciriabooks.com or contact CIRIA, Classic House, 174-180 Old Street, London EC1V 9BP.
