PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Coastal defence ‘bible’ launched

Rock is one of the main materials employed in marine and fluvial construction works to prevent scour and erosion, and to limit wave overtopping and flooding. It is estimated that at least 10 million tonnes of armourstone per year are used in construction across Europe (approximately 1 million tonnes in the UK), with an estimated value of £500m. Yet today many engineers still adopt traditional techniques in the use of rock and fail to gain the benefits of industry experience or new research.

Published by CIRIA in 1991, the first edition of the Rock Manual is considered by many industry professionals as 'the bible' for the use of rock in coastal and shoreline engineering. More than 15 years later, a comprehensive second edition has been prepared with the help of a world-wide project team of experts including over 100 specialists.

The Rock Manual – the use of rock in hydraulic engineering (C683) incorporates the significant advances in knowledge and technology that have occurred over the past 15 years and the scope of the manual has been widened to include all aspects of the use of rock in hydraulic engineering, as well as an increasing the focus on environmental and sustainability concerns.
