Managing archaeological risk in construction (RP741)

The objective of this project is to develop independent and practical guidance for construction clients and contractors on the consideration of archaeological remains on property and construction sites. The proposed guide would enable the user to fully understand and comply with planning guidance on archaeology and the historic environment. The guidance will highlight the potential risks associated with poor practice or non-compliance during the planning, design and construction process (e.g. programme delays, reputational risks, etc) and demonstrate the ways in which archaeology or heritage matters may enhance or add value to a development.
The aim of the publication is to a) enhance the industry’s understanding of the archaeological process, and b) help archaeologists understand the challenges faced by those involved in the design and construction process c) manage risks resulting from archaeology on site.

Project status

This project is now completed. Guidance will be published spring 2008 followed by a number of launch events in April and May 2008.

Project contractors

The guide will be prepared by a project team comprising CIRIA, the Museum of London Archaeology Service (MOLAS), Scott Wilson and the Institute of Field Archaeologists (IFA) under the guidance of a steering group (consisting of representatives of the funders and representatives from the property, construction and archaeological communities as well as regulators.
