Environmental good practice — training resource (RP763)

Construction activities will always have an impact on the surrounding environment and neighbours. Good environmental practice enables these impacts to be managed positively. Impacts can take one of many forms, including effects on surrounding flora and fauna, watercourses, noise or pollution. Clients, their professional advisers, contractors and the whole construction supply chain, have responsibilities for environmental management.

The construction industry is coming under increasing pressure to ensure its activities have reduced impact on the environment. The construction industry still causes more water pollution incidents than any other, and is responsible for high levels of waste – around 10 per cent of all raw materials on many sites end up as waste.

With the pressure being applied not only by regulators, environmental groups, other businesses and residents there is a need for an on site training resource to allow construction sites to better deal with the requirements placed upon them. Building on the successful updates of their environmental good practice guide and pocket book, CIRIA intend to develop a training resource to effectively tackle this need.

This project will lead to the development of a DVD Rom based on site training resource that will allow site environment managers to deliver training to site workers through presentations, film clips/ videos and toolbox talks on relevant legislation and good practice techniques covering a broad range of issues (for example materials, waste and wildlife) that can impact project programmes.

Project status

The final draft of the training resource is being completed ahead of final comments and publication in spring 2008.
