Two day training event with evening meal

Module background

This module introduces basic design information to reinforce current SUDS guidance and regulatory framework. The first day of the module will cover elementary design principles and the second day will develop these concepts to an advanced level and discuss the construction process.

Delagate knowlege level

Delegates should have an understanding of SUDS and their application within the current regulatory framework. Delegates should be familiar with the SUDS approach and basic drainage design theory.

Content

1st day – SUDS design

  • setting the design criteria and the design process
  • designing for quantity – flow and volumes (runoff/hydrology)
  • designing for water quality – pollution control and treatment
  • designing for amenity and safety
  • designing for construction and maintenance
  • introduction to design example
  • information requirements for SUDS design.

2nd day – SUDS design worked example

  • the SUDS design process
  • worked example
    • stage 1 – outline drainage proposals
    • stage 2 – detailed SUDS dessign.
  • comparison of what was actually done and also what was modelled

Learning outcomes

Following the training delegates should be able to:

  • understand design criteria and application to SUDS
  • design robust schemes that meet design criteria
  • competently develop outline and detailed drainage designs.

Design examples

Matchborough First School – a retrofit SUDS scheme avoiding pumped storage and storm sewer connections. SUDS manage overland flows and provide educational and amenity benefits.
